A logger operating illegally in the territory of isolated Waorani
Indians has been found dead. Much of the Waorani's territory has been
opened up for industrial exploitation, despite the fact that the
several groups of Waorani who remain isolated in the forest have made
it clear they do not want this.
Oil companies have already destroyed much of the northern Ecuadorian
Amazon, home to the Siona, Secoya and Cofan tribes, and are now moving
southwards into the territory of the Waorani, Quichua, Shuar and Achuar
tribes. Illegal loggers are taking advantage of the increased access to
this previously-remote area.
