Most of the Guarani's once-rich land in southern Brazil has been
destroyed. In place of the forest, there are now endless plantations of
sugar cane, and the Indians are forced to work in appalling conditions
cutting sugar cane to earn enough to live on. Much of the sugar cane is
used to produce ethanol for Brazil's petrol-substitution programme.
These children say they are 16 or 17 (16 is the minimum working age).
