The Makuxi
Makuxi and other Indians of northern Brazil prepare for the visit of
Nelson Jobim, then-Minister of Justice, in 1996. Mr Jobim was visiting
the Indians to discuss the demarcation of the Indians' land. Mr Jobim
signed a decree to demarcate the territory in 1998, but the government
has still not ratified it, and the demarcation is therefore still
incomplete. This delay is encouraging continuing violence by settlers
against the Indians - the final clip is of a young Makuxi showing the
numerous bullet wounds he received at the hands of cattle ranchers'
hired gunmen.
